Carrying the theoretical torch

Ben Haller recently suggested that the Eco-theoretic Cafe should step-up and protect the theoretical aspect of McGill’s Biology Department.  The worry is, with Claire de Mazancourt and Michel Loreau leaving soon, a large part of theoretical ecology and evolution will be missing here.  We would like to ensure that the Organismal Seminars continue to invite the world’s most prominent theoreticians.  The idea is to create a list of potential invited speakers we would like to see, and to give this list to seminar organizers, who will take this into account when allotting future speakers.  The LIST is very much still in progress, and, at the next meeting, we will discuss who is missing, who is(n’t) a theoretician, and write up a short letter.

Bring ideas!

  2. I am interested on being on the list. I mostly work on evolutionary game theory and I used to organize a reading group on the topic back in 2010, that resumed recently since I returned to McGill.

Hi Artem, thanks for your interest. Seeing as it has taken us nearly a year to get back to you you have probably realized that the group is no longer active. Magnus and I left McGill last summer. There was some talk that Ben Haller took over. Googling him is your best chance.

      • Thanks, I’ve been in touch with Ben Haller, he’s attended a few reading groups. Magnus is on the mailing list, but I don’t think he’s had a chance to attend. Too bad that you guys decided to stop this group, would be fun to keep in touch.

Tell Ben to gather the ol’ guard. I’m sure they would all reconvene for cafe et biscuits, if not for the math.
